Mary Coughlan TD, Minister for Social and Family Affairs, today launched "Understanding Pensions" - a guide to pensions written by Paul Kenny, the Pensions Ombudsman.

"The world of private and occupational pensions can be very complex and it is important to ensure information is available which is clear, concise and easily understood," Minister Coughlan said.

"This publication meets that need and will be useful to a wide range of people," the Minister added.

This second edition of "Understanding Pensions" has updated the original 1994 edition as far as the Finance Act 2004 and the Social Welfare Act, 2004. The revised edition also takes account of the Pensions (Amendment) Act.

"Understanding Pensions" is sponsored by the Department of Social and Family Affairs and is also supported by the Irish Association of Pensions Funds and the Retirement Planning Council of Ireland.
