Appointment of Secretary General to the Department of Social and Family Affairs

The Government on Wednesday 6th June 2007, announced that it had appointed Ms Bernadette Lacey to the post of Secretary-General in the Department of Social and Family Affairs. Ms Lacey will succeed Mr John Hynes who is retiring from the Department in July 2007. She will take up her appointment from 21st July 2007.

Ms Lacey joined the Department of Social Welfare in 1974 and since then, apart from a period of 4 years spent on secondment in the Department of the Public Service, she has worked in a number of areas within it. She was appointed Director General of Social Welfare Services in June 2002. As Director General, she is responsible for delivering the Department’s social insurance and social assistance schemes and related services.

A native of Dublin Ms Lacey was educated at Scoil Chaitriona, Eccles Street, UCD and Trinity College.
