The Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) issued the following security warning on Monday 7
th September 2009:
It has come to our attention that the MABS logo, together with details
similar to a MABS office address have been used in an attempt to get people to give personal information to a
third party in order to cash a pre-completed personalised cheque, which is described as a "direct assistance grant".
This communication is headed
"Grant Notification".The communication seeks personal information from those contacted and asks the recipient to submit personal details including a “payment reference number".
This communication also mentions other Government Departments and Agencies
none of which has any connection whatsoever with the communication.
MABS has no involvement whatsoever with this communication and we have been advised that it is a scam. If you, or anyone you know, receives this communication or a similar sounding communication
do not disclose any information on foot of it.
Anyone who receives this communication is asked to contact the Garda Fraud Bureau on (01) 6663741 or make contact with your local Garda station.
MABS only ever requests information from clients in accordance with internal policy and procedure.
