Mary Hanafin T.D., Minister for Social and Family Affairs today ( 24 th November 2008 ) announced almost €1 million funding for 84 Family Resource Centres and other organisations engaged in family and community services across the country.

Speaking today, Minister Hanafin said “this funding will help improve the facilities available at many of the family resource centres through renovations and upgrading of facilities – many are upgrading computer and technology equipment used in training programmes, others are using the funding for training staff or networking with other groups and organisations.  This money is in addition to the core-funding that groups supported under the Family and Community Services Resource Centre Programme receive every year.”

The Family and Community Services Resource Centre Programme commenced in 1994 and since then 107 Family Resource Centres have been established nationwide. The activities supported by the Resource Centres are designed to meet the needs of the local community and include the provision of:

  • information, advice and support to target groups and families in the area,
  • practical assistance to community groups such as training, information, advice and photocopying facilities,
  • courses of education and training opportunities,
  • child-care facilities for those attending courses provided by the project and
  • after-school clubs.

Minister Hanafin went on to say, “the total budget for the Family & Community Services Resource Centre programme in 2008 is almost €19million and is helping communities throughout the country to support families.”

These grants, which amount to a total of €978,000 will be spent on:

  • training initiatives aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of local communities and voluntary groups.
  • networking grants to encourage projects to network and to undertake joint training initiatives;
  • the purchase of equipment or purchase or renovation of premises.
