Mary Hanafin T.D., Minister for Social and Family Affairs today (8 th December 2008 ) announced over €1.8 million funding for six Family Resource Centres in counties Cork, Kerry, Leitrim, Offaly and Tipperary.

Each year in addition to providing core‑funding to groups funded under the Family and Community Services Resource Centre Programme, funding is given to Family Resource Centres for additional work and initiatives under the capital funding scheme.

Speaking today Minister Hanafin said "this year, €1.83 million will be allocated to six Family Resource Centres for the purpose of:

  • altering and extending existing premises,
  • installing fire exits and wheelchair accessible lifts,
  • improving safety and accessibility of premises,
  • refurbishing  a building, and
  • partial funding for new building.

This funding is in addition to the core-funding and the small grants of almost €1 million which I announced last week."

The total budget for the Family & Community Services Resource Centre programme in 2008 is almost €19 million to help communities throughout the country to support families.

The Family and Community Services Resource Centre Programme commenced in 1994 and since then 107 Family Resource Centres have been established nationwide. The activities supported by the Resource Centres are designed to meet the needs of the local community and include the provision of:

  • information, advice and support to target groups and families in the area,
  • practical assistance to community groups such as training, information, advice and photocopying facilities,
  • courses of education and training opportunities,
  • child-care facilities for those attending courses provided by the project and
  • after-school clubs.

Minister Hanafin concluded by saying, "the improvements and enhancements that this funding will facilitate will improve the services being provided to the communities which they serve and I am please to be able to support that."
