Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection publishes Annual Compliance and Anti-Fraud Report for 2017

The Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection today published its Annual Report for 2017 under its 2014-2018 Compliance and Anti-Fraud Strategy.

This is the Department’s fourth report under the Strategy. Covering all key areas of compliance and anti-fraud activity, the report outlines the Department’s efforts to tackle wrongful claiming and welfare fraud during 2017. It also provides insight into the work of social welfare inspectors, the Special Investigations Unit, and other officials tasked with identifying suspected fraud. 

Key outcomes from this work in 2017 include:

  • €530m of savings (consisting of payments avoided and overpayments assessed) made from control and compliance activities;

  • Over 300 more serious cases of social welfare offences and suspected fraud activities by customers referred to the Courts and Gardaí ;

  • Over €81 million recovered from customers who were overpaid in the past.

The report also includes the “Target Statement” in place for 2018.
