#JobsWeek 2016

National Jobs Week, Monday 26th to Friday 30th September 2016

Monday, 26th September: National Jobs Week is an annual initiative hosted by the Department of Social Protection to showcase the range of employment supports and services available to employers and jobseekers.  Jobs Week 2016 will run from Monday, 26th September to Friday, 30th September.  Over 14,000 jobseekers participated in Jobs Week last year and a similar level of interest is expected this year.

Over 150 events will be held in venues across the country to provide information and practical support to local employers and jobseekers. These include Jobs Fairs, Career Advice Workshops, job shadowing initiatives, networking events with employers and briefings for employers on the services offered by the Department.

The Department of Social Protection in Cork will host 7 key events for jobseekers throughout the week:

  • A Training and Careers Fair will take place today, Monday 26th September at the Department’s Intreo office in Hanover Street. The Local Education and Training Board, Biznet Cork and Innopharmalabs amongst others, will be on hand to give information and advice to jobseekers and people interested in upskilling.  The event will take place between 2.00pm and 5.00pm and all interested jobseekers are invited to attend on the day.
  • There will be a special youth employment initiative for jobseekers who are under 25 years of age held today Monday, 26th September at the James O’Keeffe Institute in Newmarket from 10.00am to 12.00 noon.
  • Tomorrow Tuesday, 27th September the Cork Institute of Technology will host a Careers and Employability Fair at its premises in Bishopstown between 11.00am and 2.30pm.   Also, on Tuesday, a Training Workshop focused for jobseekers will be held in the Hibernian Hotel in Mallow from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
  • Jobseekers are invited to a Recruitment Fair that takes place on Wednesday, 28th September at the Intreo office, Abbey Court House, George’s Quay.  A number of key employers from the customer service, security & healthcare sectors will be available to discuss current vacancies. The event will take place between 2.00pm and 5.00pm.
  • Employer support and jobseeker support events will be provided at the Ludgate Hub in Skibbereen on Wednesday, 28th September.  The Employer information event is focussed on Department of Social Protection supports and will take place from 8.30 - 9.30.  The jobseekers support and advice session will take place from 10.00 am to 12 noon.
  • An Employer support briefing will be provided on Thursday, 29th September at the Parkway Hotel, Dunmanway from 8.30 am to 9.30 am.
  • On Friday, 30th September a jobseeker training workshop will be held in the Youth Centre, Fermoy between 10.30am and 12.30pm.

Minister Leo Varadkar urged jobseekers across Ireland to check out events in their counties. “I encourage jobseekers and employers to visit some of their local Jobs Week events. Whether you're looking for work or for a new or better job, services on offer include advice on applying for jobs, preparing CVs and interview skills as well as job offers. Employers also have an opportunity to find new staff from their local area.

"Unemployment has almost halved from a peak of 15% to 8.4% today and long-term unemployment is down to 4.4%.  The Government want to halve it again. This means intensifying our focus on activation and guiding more people into work through a 'jobs first' approach, improving the quality of jobs available by making sure that work pays through reductions in the USC and improving work-related social insurance benefits like paid paternity leave, and by focusing on intergenerational unemployment and jobless households."

The Minister also encouraged employers to avail of the supports available from the Department when they employ people from the Live Register, like JobsPlus, a cash incentive of up to €10,000 per unemployed person recruited.
