The Department of Social Protection will put a facility in place to allow customers, when making arrangements with Revenue, to choose to pay their property tax over an extended period from their social welfare payments.
This new deduction at source facility will be provided for certain social welfare payments including contributory and non-contributory state pensions and other long term schemes. The schemes to be included will be agreed between the Department of Social Protection and the Revenue Commissioners.
Customers should note that the Department will apply provisions under social welfare legislation to ensure that a person’s basic means are sufficient, and will therefore not make deductions that will bring a payment below the personal rate of supplementary welfare allowance, currently set at €186 per week.
The Revenue Commissioners will be engaging in a comprehensive information campaign early in 2013 which will include issuing an information booklet to all property owners. Information on property tax and payment options, including deduction at source, can be found on the Revenue website www.revenue.ie and on www.budget.gov.ie.
