Who pays the Health Contribution?

You, the employee, pay a Health Contribution of 2% on all reckonable earnings during any week in 2007 in which you earn more than €480, and an additional 0.5% levy on all reckonable earnings exceeding €1,925 per week (equivalent to €3,850 per fortnight and to €8,342 per month). Exceptions to this are if you:

  • have a medical card
  • are aged 70 years or over
  • get a social welfare Widow's or Widower's Pension, One-Parent Family Payment or a Deserted Wife's Benefit or Allowance, or
  • get a Widow's or Widower's Pension from another EU Member State.
