1. What is Water Support?

It is a payment towards the cost of water provision whether or not you are a customer of Irish Water or have your own water supply or are members of a group scheme.

2. Who is entitled to receive Water Support?

Water Support is a payment which will issue from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection to customers who are currently in receipt of the Household Benefits Package or Fuel Allowance.

3. What is the Household Benefits Package?

This is a package of allowances which help you with the costs of running your household. The Household Benefits Package consists of an Electricity/Gas Allowance and a Free TV Licence which are subject to a number of qualifying conditions. Only one person in a household can qualify for the package at any time.

4. What is Fuel Allowance?

Fuel Allowance is a payment intended to help households that depend on long-term social welfare payments and who are unable to provide for their own heating needs during the winter season. The allowance represents a contribution towards a person's normal heating expenses and is not intended to meet those costs in full. Only one Fuel Allowance is paid to a household.

5.When do I become eligible to receive the Water Support?

Eligibility start date is the 1st October 2014, with first payments issuing by the end of quarter one 2015. Payments will be made quarterly in arrears. A customer who is awarded Fuel Allowance or Household Benefits for even one day in a quarter is eligible for receipt of the Water Support payment for that quarter.   

6. How much will the Water Support payment be?

€25 will be paid four times a year, total payment per year is €100.

7. How will this Water Support be paid by bank/post office etc?

Water Support will be paid by the same method you currently receive your current Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection payment(s).

8. Do I need to apply for the Water Support?

You do not need to apply for the water support allowance separately.  Once you have been awarded the Household Benefits Package or the Fuel Allowance, you will automatically receive the Water Support Allowance.  

9. What happens if I lose entitlement to Household Benefits or the Fuel Allowance?

The Household Benefits Package and Fuel Allowance are subject to a number of qualifying conditions which must be satisfied in order to continue to receive the payment. However should you lose your entitlement to the Household Benefits Package or the Fuel Allowance you will also automatically lose your entitlement to Water Support.

10. Have you received a letter from the Household Benefits Section of the Department asking for your Bank Account Details?

The Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection wrote to a small number of customers because the Department do not currently hold details of your nominated financial institution and therefore cannot make payments to you for Water Support without this information. ou should complete this letter and send this information to the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection by return.

11. I am currently in receipt of the Household Benefits Package and I have not received a letter from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection?

The reason you have not received a letter from the Household Benefits Section of the Department is that, the Department currently holds details of your nominated financial institution and therefore can make payments to you for Water Support.
