Niamh O'Donoghue was appointed Secretary General of the Department of Social Protection in July 2010. 

She had previously served as Director General having joined the Department in December 2007.

Prior to that, she was Assistant Secretary in Revenue with responsibility for the Border Midlands West Region from mid 2007 to December 2007 and as Assistant Secretary for Human Resources from 2001 to mid 2007.

She joined the civil service in 1979 and has served in

  • the Department of Agriculture (1979 - 1986)
  • the Department of Health (1986 - 1995)
  • the Office of the Civil Service and Local Appointments Commissioners (now the Public Appointments Service) (1995 - 2001)
  • Office of the Revenue Commissioners (2001 - 2007)

She has a primary degree in Public Administration from the IPA, and also holds an MA (Industrial Relations) from the University of Keele and an MSc (Mgmt) from TCD.
