Children born in the Republic of Ireland are now automatically allocated PPS Numbers once the birth is registered with the General Register Office (GRO) within six months, where at least one of the parents has an address in Ireland.

You should contact your local Social Welfare Office if your child is under 16 years of age and was born outside the Republic of Ireland.

Where a child aged under 16 years comes to Ireland to attend an educational Institution, he or she will be required to provide that educational institution with his or her PPS Number. Where the child is not accompanied by a parent, foster parent or guardian, a nominee of the school must attend with the child at the local PPS Number allocation centre with identity documents of the child and school’s nominee, statement of school registration, and evidence of address in order to have a PPS Number allocated to the child.
