The Central Debt Unit (CDU) is responsible for coordinating the implementation of the debt recovery strategy in the Department of Social Protection and for monitoring the operation of the strategy.

CDU is available to give advice on all aspects of overpayments and debt recovery – queries in regards to repaying your debt should be emailed to centraldebt@welfare.ie.

If you have a query regarding how your overpayment came about, you should contact the office or scheme that was paying you when the overpayment occurred.

What is a debt?

A debt is any money owed to the Department arising from an overpayment to a person. A debt may consist of an overpayment or a number of overpayments.

What is an overpayment?

An overpayment is any social welfare assistance or benefit payment which the person who received the amount was not entitled to receive.
