Since the 4th July 2007 the Pre-Retirement Allowance scheme was abolished for new customers. This means that it is no longer possible for retired persons to qualify for Pre- Retirement credits.
However, you may be entitled to Jobseeker's Credits ( see section 5) or Illness Benefit credits ( see section 6) subject to satisfying the conditions of these schemes.
Otherwise Voluntary Contributions may be an option for a person who wishes to protect their Social Welfare entitlements ( see section 9).
State Pension (Transition)
You will get credits automatically up to age 66, if you are getting a State Pension (Transition). These credits will help maintain your cover for Treatment Benefit and may help you qualify for the maximum rate of State Pension (Contributory) if you are on a reduced rate of State Pension (Transition).
