Rent Supplement

Normally, when a person enters full time employment (over 29 hours) they no longer qualify for a rent supplement, however if they have been in receipt of a rent supplement and unemployed for 12 months or more, are deemed RAS (Rental Accomodation Scheme) eligible and enter full time employment, they continue to hold the right to be assessed for a rent supplement subject to a means test.

Mortgage Interest Supplement

You may retain your mortgage interest supplement if you have been unemployed for 12 months or more, return to full time employment (over 29 hours) and sign off your social welfare payment.  In these cases gross household income must not exceed €317.43 per week.  Under these retention arrangements you will continue to get 75% of your Mortgage Interest Supplement rate during your first year in employment, 50% in the second year and 25% in the third and fourth year. After the fourth year you will no longer be entitled to Mortgage Interest Supplement if you are in employment. (Subject to the discontinuance of the scheme from 1st January 2018)
