The maximum weekly amount of allowance payable is the difference between the old and the new rent. If, however, the old rent was less than €13.00, the maximum allowance is the new rent less €13.00.

You may get a reduced allowance if your means do not entitle you to the maximum amount.

1.1 IF YOU ARE SINGLE OR WIDOWED

If you are single or widowed, you may receive the maximum allowance if your means are not more than €230.30 per week. The maximum allowance is reduced by 50 cent for every €1 of means between €230.30 and €430.30 and by €1 for every €1 of means over €430.30.

Examples

1. You are single with means of €230.30 per week.

  • Old Rent: €20.00 New Rent: €127.00
    The maximum allowance is €107.00, that is,
    New Rent €127.00 less Old Rent €20.00

Allowance payable: €107.00 per week


2. You are single with means of €230.30 per week.

  • Old Rent: €5.00 (minimum Rent €13.00) New Rent: €225.00
    The maximum allowance is €212.00, that is,
    New Rent €225.00 less minimum Rent €13.00.

Allowance payable: €212.00 per week


3. You are single with means of €520.30 per week.

  • Old Rent: €5.00 (minimum Rent €13.00) New Rent: €300.00
    The maximum allowance is €287.00

Maximum allowance is reduced by the amount of means over €230.30 as follows:

Reduction for each €1 of means from:

€230.30 to €430.30 €200.00 x €0.50
=
€100.00
€430.30 to €520.30 €90.00 x €1.00
=
€90.00
   
€190.00
Allowance payable: €287.00 less €190.00
=
€97.00 per week


1.2 IF YOU ARE MARRIED

If you are married (A married person for the purpose of this allowance is a person whose spouse or partner is living with them or who is wholly or mainly maintained by them.), you may receive the maximum allowance if your means are not more than €436.60 per week. The maximum allowance is reduced by 50 cent for every €1 of means between €436.60 and €636.60 and by €1 for every €1 of means over €636.60.

Examples

1. You are married with means of €261.10 a week

  • Old Rent: €15.00 New Rent: €122.00
    Maximum Allowance is €107.00 that is,
    New Rent €122.00 less Old Rent €15.00

Allowance payable: €107.00 per week


2. You are married with means of €720.10 per week.

  • Old Rent: €5.00 (minimum Rent €13.00) New Rent: €300.00
    The maximum allowance is €287.00, that is,
    New Rent €300.00 less minimum Rent €13.00

Maximum allowance is reduced by the amount of means over €436.60 as follows:

Reduction for each €1 of means from:

€436.60 to €636.60 €200.00 x €0.50
=
€100.00
€636.60 to €720.10 €83.50 x €1.00
=
€83.50
€183.50
Allowance payable: €287.00 less €183.50
=
€103.50 per week


YOUR ALLOWANCE MAY ALSO BE AFFECTED:

  • By the income of other people living with you

or

  • If your accommodation is beyond your reasonable needs.

Note:
No payment will be made if the amount of the allowance is less than €1. In calculating the means of a person, an amount of €19.30 shall be disregarded in respect of each qualified child.
