Are savings that I receive from a compensation payment assessed as means?

Leaflet Sections

Certain types of compensation payments are not assessed as means. For example, any money you have from a compensation payment received as a result of contracting Hepatitis C or HIV from the use of Human Immunoglobulin - Anti - D, whole blood or other blood products is disregarded from the means test in certain circumstances. Please contact the Department for more details.

Other compensation payments are also disregarded from the means test if:

  • awarded by the Residential Institutions Redress Board established under section 3 of the Residential Institutions Redress Act 2002 (No 13 of 2002), or
  • made to people with disabilities caused by Thalidomide.
