Can payments from other countries help me qualify?

If you are getting a payment from a country covered by EC Regulations or a Bilateral Social Security Agreement with Ireland, you may qualify for Fuel Allowance if you satisfy the conditions and you are:

  • living in Ireland,
    and
  • aged 66 or over,
    or
  • under age 66 and getting Invalidity Pension or Benefit (for over 12 months), a Widow’s, Widower’s or Surviving Civil Partner’s Pension or a similar payment from another country covered by EC Regulations or a Bilateral Social Security Agreement.
The countries covered by either EC Regulations or under a Bilateral Agreement are:
Australia Hungary Portugal
Austria Iceland Republic of Cyprus (Cyprus South)
Belgium Ireland Republic of Korea
Bulgaria Isle of Man Romania
Canada Italy Slovakia
Channel Islands Latvia Slovenia
Czech Republic Liechtenstein Spain
Denmark Lithuania Sweden (see Note)
Estonia Luxembourg Switzerland
Finland Malta the Netherlands
France New Zealand the United Kingdom
Germany Norway the United States of America
Greece Poland  

*Note: Certain limits apply to Jobseeker’s Benefit in relation to Switzerland.

You can also take into account periods of insurance or residence in some of these countries to help you qualify.
