While receiving Illness Benefit, your claim may be reviewed and you may be asked to attend a medical assessment. This is conducted by a Medical Assessor, a doctor employed by the Department of Social Protection. They give a second opinion on whether you are incapable of work by taking into account your current state of health. We will give you advance notice of an appointment for an assessment. You may bring along whatever medical evidence you wish the doctor to see.
Note
If you are asked to attend for a medical assessment, you must attend.
The Deciding Officer will take the Medical Assessor’s opinion into account when considering whether you continue to qualify for Illness Benefit.
If your payment is stopped, we will tell you immediately and tell you of your right of appeal against the decision.
